The Faculty of Management Science 5th Prof. Adebayo Akinrele Memorial Lecture Series took place at the main Lecture Hall of the Faculty of Management Science with the theme: Collective inclusion for Nation Building. The occasion which witnessed a large turnout of top functionaries including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, senior members of the Edo State Government, Edo State Legislators amongst others. The event kicked off with the opening speech by the Vice Chancellor which was represented by Deputy Vice chancellor (Administration), Prof. J. O. Ehiorobo.
The Vice Chancellor in his opening remarks welcomed all invitees. Whilst extolling the many achievement and accomplishment of Prof. Akinrele-particularly his proprietary efforts in advancing the department of business management, thanked the organizers of the event. He further reiterated his administration support and commitment to the Faculty of Management Sciences.
As part of the programme, the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences gave his address. He began by welcoming all guests to the Lecture. He thanked the University’s Management for providing and extending support to the Faculty. Whilst soliciting for more support for the Faculty, the Dean highlighted the challenging areas confronting the Faculty. He informed the audience of the policy within the Faculty of seeking and building private partnership to achieve the programs of the faculty as well as to broaden the effect of its students. He expressed hope and determination to ensure the success of the policy. In concluding, he reminded the audience of the important role of the faculty of management sciences in providing qualified pool of talent which can competently serve in assisting the nation navigate it current economic woes.
Similarly, the Edo state Governor who was represented by Chief of staff thanked the University of Benin for putting such an event together. He thanked the faculty for recognizing the contributions of the late Prof. Akinrele by initiating this memorial series. The governor re-echoed the current economic challenges facing the country and frowned at the economic management of the past. The Governor gave assurances and commitment to changing the current economic realities with the state and harped on the policy of inclusiveness in his administration. He challenged scholarly mind to partner with government in providing solutions to the economic challenges facing the country. In concluding, he offered continued support and partnership to the Faculty of Management Sciences and by extension the University management.
Shortly after, the guest Lecturer Prof. Festus Ezedonmi spoke on the topic: Entrepreneurship Education; a critical need for Nigeria for today and tomorrow.
The Guest Lecturer drew linkages between the quality of skilled and well trained citizens and the economic prosperity of a country. He further stressed the pertinent requirement of proper and sound education towards assisting solving in addressing Nigeria’s present economic challenges. He questioned the current approach to education-which is focused on equipping student find white collar jobs as oppose to equipping student with the requisite skill in order for them to be job creators.In concluding, He called for wide and compulsory adoption of entrepreneur studies in all secondary and tertiary institutions.
The 5th Prof. Adebayo Akinlere memorial lecture climaxed with award of excellence to notable invitees.
