The University of Benin MLS CPD 2017 held on the 11th of July at the university’s banquet hall with the theme: Molecular Diagnostics in chemical laboratories and translational research: The Road map. The event which drew an audience of eminent research personnel saw in attendance the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof F.F.O Orumwense, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (academic) Prof P.E. Iribhogbe, Provost, Deans and professors from the school of Basic Medical Sciences and Medical Laboratories Sciences.
Delivering his keynote address, the Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Dr. M.A Okungbowa welcomed the guests to 4th edition of the CPD series in the Department which he noted is accredited by the medical lab sciences of Nigeria. He assured the participants of an insightful workshop and enjoined the participants to fully engage themselves in the workshop to enable them broaden their knowledge. He concluded by harping on the need for collaborative research between researchers in finding solution to contemporary issues.
The Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS), Prof (Mrs.) H.A OBOH in her address warmly welcomed all participants. She went on to further stress the importance and relevance of the workshop in helping to foster enhanced capacity of professionals and researches. She listed the benefits to include:
- Allow professionals to follow trends and contribute fully
- Enhance capacity of professionals
The effects she also outlined to include: boosting credibility of professionals amongst others.
She ended her address by calling on participant to fully immerse themselves in the activities scheduled during the workshop.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof F.F.O Orumwense who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Prof. J.O Ehiorobo welcomed guests and participants to the workshop. He proceeded to acknowledge the immense impact of the CPD workshop over the years. He further highlighted the many achievements and contribution of the Department of Medical Lab sciences. He reassured all present of his administration’s continued support towards the Department. He thanked the organizers of the workshop and enjoined participants to put the knowledge garnered into practice.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards of excellence to the General Manager, Independent Television (ITV) by the Vice chancellor on behalf of the Medical Lab Science Association of Nigeria, the University of Benin and the Department of Medical Lab Sciences.
A certificate of participation was presented to the Vice Chancellor, Prof F.F.O Orumwense and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (academics) Prof P.E IRIBHOGBE.

Dr H.B OSADOLOR (Department of Medical Lab Sciences, UNIBEN), who spoke on the topic:
Molecular Toxicology in Public Health Laboratories.
The event rounded off with questions and interactions on the lectures.
